THE COINAGE OF APPOLONIA PONTICA VI – I BC.
Abstract: The coin is a piece of metal of gold, silver, copper or bronze of a certain weight and carries a sign of power that guarantees the purity of the metal. " The coins of Antiquity are some of the most valuable and beautiful archaeological finds, from which we draw information about the way of living of our ancestors. Information about the times in which they lived, their beliefs, and their relationship with other peoples. One of the most valuable coins found in the lands of present-day Bulgaria are the coins of Miletus Polis - Apolonia Pontica, founded in the 6th century BC on the shores of the Black Sea. Apolonia is the first Black Sea polis that mints autonomous coins, which are nowadays accepted as terminus post quem for dating the coins of other cities minted in the lands of present-day Bulgaria. Apolonia's coins are not just an ancient piece of metal. They, though without a voice, uncover fragments of the history of one of the greatest ancient cities and people that ever existed.
