============================= Abstract: The article aims to trace and compare key features of the Gothic imagery of late 18th century and early 19th century in the following works: William Beckford's Gothic tale "Vathek", Mary Shelley's novel "Frankenstein" and Edgar Allan's short stories "Premature Burial" and "Loss of breath". The work of these writers manifests dark, fantasy worlds inhabited by monsters at the centre of which is the human soul possessed by various demons. It is the confronting of the demons of the soul that is the core of their work, showing us the sunset of human genius, subject to an impulse and desire, possessed by the ego. From this point of view, starting from biographical "common places" or stylistic affinities among these authors, it would be functional to trace the realisation of the theme of fears: similarities of images and motifs or of prominent figurative uses of the Gothic in the works of Beckford, Shelley and Poe.
