============================= Abstract: The following project presents a concise presentation of the corpus-based analysis of the adjective “expensive”. The definitions from Etymology Dictionary, Collins COBUILD Dictionary, Longman Dictionary, Cambridge Dictionary, Macmillan Dictionary, Oxford Dictionary are compared with the Valency Dictionary of English (VDE 2004). The corpus is extracted from The ACL Anthology Reference Corpus (ARC) by using Sketch Engine. The analysis is based on 150 concordance lines. The aim is to point out the most frequently used complementation patterns with “expensive”, and for that reason the adjective is analysed in terms of various constructions. The conclusions sum up the findings of the study.
