The archaeological data as well as physico-chemical elemental composition analyses, allowed two groups of hematite, goethite and cinnabar, utilised for symbolic and ritual purposes to be identified. The results revealed Early Bronze Age use of titanium-rich hematite during the early and late Yamna culture (3100 – 2600 calBC) and the earliest use of cinnabar in mortuary practices during the late Yamna period (2900 – 2600 cal BC).
