This study examines the translation strategies and techniques employed by Angela Rodel, the English translator of Georgi Gospodinov’s Time Shelter, the Natural Intelligence in this research, as contrasted to the algorithms applied by AI. The preliminary analysis has shown that so far few studies have been dedicated to reveal whether fiction texts could be translated by machine translation. Our investigation aims to compare the advantages and drawbacks of AI, namely ChatGPT5, versus the human translation of a fiction book. The results demonstrate how AI’s upgrade can help the translation industry but, in many cases, cannot replace the human touch in a fiction text. This research could be of interest to researchers of Translation Studies and students, especially those exploring AI’s impact on literary translation, academic institutions, which can integrate the findings into their curricula focused on emerging digital tools and human-AI collaboration models, and last but not least translation associations that are engaged actively with questions of AI in literature.
