2026 ============================= Abstract: This article explores the historical development and regional significance of the two most prominent Greek poleis on the Western Black Sea coast – Mesambria Pontica and Apollonia Pontica – from the Archaic period to the Roman intervention in the 1st century BC. Based on archaeological and numismatic evidence, the study analyzes the strategic urban planning of these centers, comparing the peninsular model of Mesambria with the initially insular character of Apollonia. The research examines the institutional frameworks of the cities, including the roles of the boule, demos, and strategoi, as well as their economic prosperity driven by maritime trade and early coinage. A key focus is placed on the complex interactions between the Greek colonists and the local Thracian population, leading to a unique cultural synthesis and religious syncretism. Finally, the article addresses the impact of the Roman conquest in 72 BC, highlighting the resilience and continuity of these urban centers as they integrated into the new Roman political order while preserving their Hellenic identity.
