COMPLEMENTATION PATTERNS OF THE PREDICATE ADJECTIVE ESSENTIAL: A CORPUS-BASED ANALYSIS

2025 ============================= Abstract:This project presents a short analysis of the adjective “essential” using a corpus-based approach. The definitions from the Longman Dictionary and the Valency Dictionary of English (VDE 2004) are compared. The corpus data is taken from The ACL Anthology Reference Corpus (ARC) using Sketch Engine. The analysis is based on 100 concordance lines. The goal is to identify the most common sentence patterns in which "essential" appears. For this reason, the adjective is studied in different grammatical structures. The conclusions summarize the main findings of the study.
