Шуменски университет „Епископ Константин Преславски” Факултет по хуманитарни науки Катедра История и археология 2026 ============================= Abstract: The architectural style of the palace buildings and fortifications during the affirmation of the Bulgarian state in the Balkans after the end of the 7th century is the subject of much debate. Given the scarcity of the available archaeological data, it makes reasonable that these debates are often more emotionally charged than based on a rigorous analysis. Since Pliska (Pliskova) is the earliest and most distinctive site from this period, it is most suitable for study. This significant fortress, that covers an area of roughly 23 square kilometers and is enclosed by an earthen fortification, has a royal residence as well as pagan and Christian temples. The formation of a permanent royal residence probably began after the mid-8th century or at the latest towards the end of it. The first large structures within it date from the early 9th century. The current study, which focuses on the so-called Throne Palace, is an outcome of discussions and joint work with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pavel Georgiev, a long-time researcher of Pliska's remnants and early Bulgarian history. I am grateful for his assistance in correcting a lot of misconceptions concerning old Bulgarian cultural and political history. The study includes a review of existing hypotheses regarding Pliska's architecture, in particular the Throne Palace, an analysis of some data from archaeological excavations, a presentation of potential analogies based on the available information, and a digital three-dimensional reconstruction of the Throne Palace.
