Шуменски университет „Епископ Константин Преславски“ Катедра История и археология 2026 ============================= Abstract: The present study examines the architectural characteristics and architectural sculpture of selected Early Christian basilicas in Northeastern Bulgaria dating from the 4th to 7th centuries AD. Based on archaeological, architectural, and art-historical evidence from Odessos, Marcianopolis, Zaldapa, Djanavara, Palmatis, Cape St. Athanasius near Byala, and the recently investigated basilica near the village of Zvezdica, the article explores the interaction between imperial artistic models and local building traditions. Particular attention is paid to the distribution of Proconnesian and Docimian marble, the activities of local workshops, the symbolic language of stone decoration, and the evidence for technological transfer revealed through stonecutters’ and assembly marks. The study demonstrates that Northeastern Bulgaria occupied an active position within the cultural, economic, and religious networks of the Early Byzantine world. The paper also emphasizes the importance of preserving and presenting archaeological heritage as a means of safeguarding and transmitting historical memory to future generations.
